Delegates voted based on candidates’ performance

National Democratic Congress (NDC) party bigwigs, delegates and supporters of the party gathered at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, December 17, for the party’s 10th National Delegates Congress to elect national executive officers.
Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, popularly known as General Mosquito, won the chairmanship of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) with an overwhelming margin.
He polled 5569 to beat his main challenger Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, the incumbent, who got 2892 votes.
The Western Regional Chairman for the NDC, Nana Toku speaking on the Jolly Breakfast Show on Skyy Power 93.5FM said the delegates voted based on the performance of the candidates in the past four (4) years.
He said the only way delegates evaluate the performance of party executives is through their votes and they did just that on Saturday as the incumbent who lost the election did not meet the demands of the delegates.
He said, “The only way delegates speak is through their votes, I am a victim and I can tell you I campaigned for Asiedu Nketsia which is a way of speaking on matters in the party.”
“As I am speaking to you, and as Chairman of the Western Region NDC party, I am being monitored by the people here and when the time comes for them to vote, they will evaluate me and speak through it, that is what happened on Saturday.”
The other contestants for the NDC Chairmanship race, Mr Samuel Yaw Adusei and Nii Armah Ashitey polled 52 and 38 votes respectively.
Earlier, Mr Asiedu Nketia who was clad in war apparel, during his speech asked the party faithful for forgiveness for any misconduct he might have committed during his 17-year tenure as General Secretary.
In the race for the General Secretary position, Mr Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, former MP for Ketu South also won a landslide victory over the other two contenders at the National Delegates conference.
The former Deputy Minister for Finance and former propaganda secretary contested with Dr Peter Boamah Otukunor, who served as Mr Nketia’s Deputy and Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, a former Sports Minister and well know Master of Ceremonies at the party’s ceremonies.
