EKMA continues to fight against child labour – MCE – Skyy Power FM
The Municipal Chief Executive of the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly Mr Kojo Acquah says the assembly embarked on a number of activities to fight child labour in the municipality.
He said the Assembly joined the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations together with other Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), to commemorate the World Day Against Child Labour on Monday 12th June 2023, under the national theme, “Intensify Action Against Child Labour; Do it Fast, do it Now”.
Speaking at the 2nd Ordinary Meeting at the 4th Session of EKMA, the MCE said child labour exists in the communities in forms such as street hawking on streets by children during schooling hours, engagement of children as bus conductors, which the Assembly is working tirelessly to bring a halt to it.
He said, “Child labour exists in our communities in forms such as street hawking on streets by children during schooling hours, engagement of children as bus conductors, in the collection of refuse from communities and in sand-wining activities, among others. The Assembly through the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development and the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), among other stakeholders, is currently working assiduously to ensure that child labour is brought to a halt within our Municipality in the shortest possible time.”
Still, on social welfare and community development, the MCE said a total of Two Thousand and
Fifty (2,050) households were beneficiaries of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP). Four Hundred and FiftyFive (455) individuals benefitted from the payments. In all, a total amount of ThirtyFive Thousand, One Hundred and Ninety-Eight Ghana Cedis (Gh¢35,198.00) was cashed out from the LEAP officers.
He said, “Payment in the second quarter started on Monday 3rd July 2023. So far, reports received indicate that, twenty-four (24) beneficiaries, comprising one (1) male and twenty-three (23) females visited the bank for withdrawal purposes. The total number of beneficiaries was Four Hundred and Forty-Two (442) in communities such as Anaji-fie, West and East Tanokrom, Effia, Apremdo, Whindo, Assakae, Adientem and Mpatado.”
