Fisherfolks lament impact of close season as they appeal for support – Skyy Power FM
Fishermen and fishmongers are lamenting the current close season.
The fisheries commission made it known to the public that, the close season will take effect on the 1st of July for a period of one month.
To this effect, SkyyNews visited the Sekondi Fishing harbour to interact with some fishermen and fishmongers about the exercise.
Speaking to some fishermen, they said surviving with their family in this period will be a challenging one.
According to them, even though close season is in session, they still have to provide for their family and this will be difficult for them.
Some fishmongers also added that announcing the close season in this month is not favourable to them. As a matter of fact, July is the most profitable month for them.
Fishermen: “Fishermen children also go to school. Now there is a close season, which money are we to use to pay for our wards fees? Since the close season is in session, there should be some money from the government for us to share. Most of us have large families of which the burden is on us”.
Fishmongers: “There is no money. The close season in a way is not favourable to us. The month of July is our season of bumper harvest and we have little money. So the government should do something about it. We will be glad if it is placed in March or April”.
They therefore call on the government, to provide them with some foodstuffs or token, to sustain their families while the close season continues.
