There has been a shortage of water in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region due to inadequate water from the Pra River to the Dabose treatment plant.

The Chief manager of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in the Western Region, Engineer Mac Doe, told the media that, they are not having enough inflow of water into the sump where the abstraction takes place.

He said what they are experiencing is a result of a lot of silt that has been deposited around the intake of the plant.

“This has made it in such a way that the flow of the river flows in other directions and we are not having enough water into the sump where we have to abstract water for treatment.”

Engineer Doe indicated that the dry season is also a factor that has contributed to the low inflow of water as the level has gone down which has exposed the silt and is causing the problem.

He said they produce 27,000 cubic metres a day and since these factors set in, they do only half of that at the moment.

“There is water flowing in the river but we don’t get enough flowing in our treatment plant as expected.”

Engineer Doe indicated the measure they are taking is to desilt and dredge the area of high silt concentration to get more water in the plant.
