HIV/AIDS infection in the Western Region on the rise

Ghana has been named one of the leading countries in the world with the fastest rate of new HIV infections.

Latest statistics also reveal that over 45,000 young people between the ages of 15 and 24 are HIV positive with females accounting for 80% of the infections.

This poses a huge risk in Ghana’s fight to have an HIV-free status.

Director General of the Ghana Aids Commission Dr Steve Atuahene Kyeremeh says the Commission is concerned about the increasing rate of risky behaviour in the country.

The Technical Coordinator for the Ghana Aids commission Mr Dramani Yakubu speaking exclusively to Skyy News indicated that the Western Regional data is similar to that of the national data as there are currently 23,904 persons living with HIV in the Western Region and 1,101 people infected with the virus in 2022.

He said, “The current HIV Prevalence in the Region is 1.63%. This means that, out of every 100 people in the Western Region, 2 of them are living with HIV.”

“This data tells us that HIV is still here with us and we should not take risks such as unprotected sexual relationships with multiple partners.”

Mr Yakubu also gave reasons why more females are infected with the virus than their male counterparts saying females are always at the receiving end the biological nature of their body makes it easier for them to attract the virus.

He advised the general citizenry on how to prevent themselves from the virus and what one has to do if he or she is infected.

“When you get the virus, go to the hospital because treatment is free and if you take your medication regularly, you will live your life just like any normal human being.”
