Military brutalities paints a picture of animal kingdom – Lecturer

A Lecturer at the University of Applied Management, Dr Abubakar Mohammed Marzuq has described as unfortunate, the military brutalities recorded in the country in recent times.

According to him, the development only paints a picture of an animal kingdom something which was uncharacteristic of a democratic state like Ghana.

He noted the development was not new and expressed his fear what the future would hold for the country if not addressed.

Dr Mohammed Marzuq was speaking on Pan African television’s Good Morning Africa on Wednesday, July 7, monitored by GhanaPlus.com.

“What amazes me is that, that nasty incident paints a picture of the animal kingdom that is uncharacteristic of a democratic state and that is very unfortunate and I am much more alarmed by the reality that this is not the first time it has been the culture of some disgruntled elements  in the army and for them to think that we will go back to the dark days when the cheapest recruit hinders on life and dead, it unfortunate, I think they are day dreaming”.

Mr Marzuq Abubakar who is also Political and Governance Expert expressed the fear Ghanaians would soon confront the country’s security, especially those involved in the brutality if an end was not sought immediately and called on authorities to bring the perpetrators in the recent brutalities to book.

“I am afraid that if this nonsense is not handled well it will get to a stage when the ordinary Ghanaian will be ready to confront the military thug and that would be unfortunate let pray that we don’t get to that stage but the best thing we can do is to allow the law to take it cause and the culprit should be brought to justice,” he bemoaned.

Military brutalities

The country’s security forces, the military, most especially, had come under intense scrutiny following the shooting and the killing of two unarmed protestors at Ejura in the Ashanti Region.

Four others sustained various degree of injuries in a protest organized by the youth of Dagombaline, a suburb of Ejura to demand justice for the murder of a social activist and #FixTheCountry campaigner, Ibrahim Mohammed popularly known as Kaaka Mucho.

The military again had been in the news for the wrong reasons after a viral video on social media on Thursday, July 1, 2021, days after the Ejura incident showed armed military officers brutalizing some residents of Wa, in the Upper West Regional allegedly over a missing mobile phone.

The officers forced the resident, mostly young men to sleep in the gutters, slap and beat them over the phone which report indicate was snatched from the hands of the military man together with other items while returning from a super market.

A three-member committee is however, probing the Ejura incident.
