Sankofa Gold Limited Resumes full operations after 2 years of shutdown – Skyy Power FM
Ghana’s own gold tailings company, Sankofa Gold Limited in Prestea in the Western Region of Ghana has begun full operation after two years of a total shutdown.

The mining company which was established in 1994 as a subsidiary of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) to extract gold from historic mining tailing in the Western Region shutdown all its operations in 2016 due to what was described as mismanagement.
After several years of shutdown, the Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited has begun full operations under new management led by Mr. Justice Acquah. The Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku-Duker in the company of the Western Regional Minister, Dr, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah and some officials from the Minerals Commission on Thursday, April 6, 2023 paid a working visit to the Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited to acquaint themselves with the challenges confronting the company and how best government can address them to sustain the company.

The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku-Duker commended the management of Sankofa Gold for the timely administrative interventions employed to begin and sustain the operations of the company. He indicated that, salaries of workers were in arrears before the company was shut down in 2015, but now he is excited to know from their records that the workers are paid and are happy under the new management.

The Managing Director for Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited, Mr Justice Acquah told reporters that this is the first-time government officials have visited the company in the last 17 years.
“The last visit was in 2006 and since then no official from the government has come here, not even the sector Minister nor his deputy.”

He added that the major worry was the other gold tailing companies that have been established around Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited. He laments that these tailing companies have become a challenge to them because they buy the tailings which was supposed to be sold to Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited.
That notwithstanding he assured the deputy minister for lands and natural resources that they will ensure that their targets are achieved for the growth of Ghana’s own gold tailings company.

He however appealed to government to direct any other gold tailing company to set up in other regions so that Sankofa Gold Limited can have enough tailings for their operations.
