Some Apremdo women resort to prostitution as delayed road construction denies source of income

Some residents of Apremdo, a suburb of the Effia Kwesimintsim Municipality in the Western Region say that they have been denied their livelihood due to delay in the construction of the town road.

Skyy Power FM journalists were at the community to engage some residents in relation to the delays in construction of their town road since it is a major concern to them.

This comes after the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Kwesimintsim Constituency, Mr Prince Hamid Armah told Skyy News that the contractor responsible for the construction of the Apremdo town road has been fully paid but has refused to work.

According to them, they are disappointed in the government for the delay since the construction of the road led to the destruction of structures along the road which were mostly businesses set up by them.

Also, their major hope was that the road construction would finish soon so they could get back on track with their business but all hope is lost now due to the MP’s statement.

Speaking to a resident, she revealed that the road construction has put her in debt since her business structure was destroyed after a short period of going for a loan to finance it which she has to result to prostitution now to survive.

She said, “Most of us are jobless now because we have no work to do at the moment, getting a good job is not easy so the only option is the sex work to finance ourselves…I have to do what I need to do to survive.”

Another resident who spoke said, “I went for a loan to finance my business, I was told to remove my structure because the road was about to be fully constructed, I am now in debt, I have kids and there are no good jobs for me to do, the only option is prostitution to care for myself.”

Other residents approved the decision of the women to engage in the shameful act of prostitution because they believe there is no other option for these women other than that since the government has failed on its part.

It was further revealed that uncompleted drains, as a result of the road construction has led to a high rate of malaria infections.

They made it known now the gutters are choked because they were not completed leading to stagnation of water which results in the breeding of mosquitoes in the community.

“About 90% of us in this community have been infected with malaria all because of the delay in the construction of this road, we are getting sick and our kids as well, our business is also destroyed in the process, what do we have to do now,” a resident told Skyy News.
