A Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Kamal Deen Abdullai has blamed the persistent leakage of examination papers in the country on the educational system.
According to him, the system simply teach students to just prepare for examination, write, pass without focusing on the development of their intelligence quotient.
He said unlike years back when the country could boast of graduates with high IQ’s , same could not be said about recent university graduates adding that the IQ level of such persons were noting to write home about.
Mr Abdulai was speaking about the rescheduling of two papers by the West African Examination Council, organizers of the West African Senior High School Certificate Examination on TV3 NewDay on Thursday, September 16, monitored by GhanaPlus.com.
“Bella, we also run this system that causes this problem out there. What system are we running?, teaching kids just to prepare themselves for examination and nothing else. The IQ level of many students is questionable, somebody is out of the university, am not even talking about SHS, a degree holder, engage the person and try to measure the IQ level of that person is a not not not”.
“Compare that and contrast to then those days when people came out of A level and O level, the IQ level they held, go to the university and come out, trust me, today, that is lacking it is because today we just put people in there, try to say go through the process, come out, you have a degree, you have masters, you have this and some even gloat over it, I have 10masters, I have five masters, I have six masters meanwhile there is nothing show on the table, trust me. You sit with the person and the person is as empty as anything. We have somebody who is thinking scholarly; who come out as a scholar but yet the person has nothing to show in terms of academic laurels because the IQ level of that person is high”.
“So, it is the way we train our kids that Is why they just prepare, If it is exams, let me get the apo, write, pass and come out and am done”.
He said until all stakeholders put their shoulders to the wheel and find a lasting solution, the development would come back to hunt the country in the near future as the WASSCE certificate would lose it credibility and would make it impossible for holders of of the certificate to pursue higher education outside the country.
WAEC suspend WASSCE two papers
The West African Examination Council on Wednesday, September 15 announced the rescheduling of physics and business management papers for fear it had been leaked to the public.
Speaking at a Press Conference in Accra, the head of the council’s Test Administration Division, Mr George Ohene-Mantey, revealed extract of the papers were leaked on social media.
“The cheating social media groups were in full swing prior to the conduct of the mathematics and the English language papers on 9th and 13th September.”
“After the administration of the test, careful scrutiny of the several versions [of suspected leaks] received indicated that extracts of parts of the questions in mathematics elective two and section A of English Language two were circulated on social media platforms.”
He noted the Council would put measure in place to ensure the credibility of the exams.
