Tidal waves hit parts of Sekondi, residents call for sea defence

Some residents of Sekondi, a fishing town in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) have called on the government to fix a sea defence system in the community.

Tidal waves have caused havoc to some coastal communities in the Western and Volta Region and Ada in the Greater Accra region, threatening their lives and livelihoods.

The waves swept through the township of Sekondi, filling up the streets and some portions of their street market in the early hours of Monday, April 4.

Some market women who spoke to Skyy Power 93.5FM indicated that the sea defence which was constructed during the former President J. A Kuffours government has deteriorated and there is a need to restructure it.

Due to this deterioration, it has given way for the seawater to flood the township whenever the tide rises.

Some women were also counting their losses as waves destroyed some of the structures they use for business including their products as well.

However, they are now living in fear as they are scared the next wave will be more deadly than this recent one.
