WAEC releases 2021 provisional BECE results, 184 candidates’ results cancelled

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) on Monday released the provisional results of the 2021 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for the school candidates.

The subject results of 138 candidates have been cancelled for the offence of either bringing in foreign materials into the examination hall or colluding with other candidates while the entire results of 46 candidates have been cancelled for the offence of either sending mobile phones into the examination hall or impersonation.

The subject results of 148 candidates and the entire results of 109 candidates were withheld pending the conclusion of investigations into various cases of alleged examination malpractice.

This was in a statement signed by Reverend Victor Brew, Head of Legal Department, WAEC and copied to the Ghana News Agency.

It said the results were approved at the 32nd meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee for the BECE held on February 22, 2022.

The statement said the scripts of candidates from 24 schools in certain subjects were undergoing scrutiny, and that the withheld results of candidates may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of investigations.

It cautioned all stakeholders to be wary of fraudsters who promised to upgrade results for a fee and urged candidates to note that WAEC results were secured and could be authenticated.

The statement said the results would be dispatched to the schools through the Metropolitan/Municipal/District Directors of Education.

It said the results could also be accessed online at the Council’s website www.waecqh.org.

A total of 572,167 candidates made up of 287,730 males and 284,437 females sat for the 2021 examination.

Among the registered candidates, 61 had visual impairment, 321 identified with hearing impairment and 86 candidates had special assessment needs due to other conditions.

The total entry figure was 7.61 per cent higher than the 2020 entry of 531,707. In all 18,028 schools presented candidates for the examination, which was administered at 2,158 centres.

Out of the total number of candidates who registered, 7,315, representing 1.28 per cent were absent.
