We want to know how $6 million Maxam fine will be utilised

Maxam Company Limited, the company at the centre of last month’s explosion at Appiatse in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality of the Western Region has been slapped a fine of US$6 million by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

This is after a report was submitted to the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor after tasking a committee to investigate the explosion.

About 876 victims of the Appiatse Explosion, which killed 14 persons and injured 179 on January 20, 2022, are receiving Psychological First Aid (PFA).

However, the Assemblymember for Bepor-Appiatse electoral area, Mr Thomas Enyam, say the people of Appiatse have a lot of questions that need to be answered concerning the fine.

According to Mr Enyam who was speaking to Skyy Power 93.5FM, their first question is, will be $6 million be used for the reconstruction of the Appiatse community?

Secondly, Is it the same amount of money that would be used to compensate the victims of the Appiatse explosion?

Also, will part of the money cater for the hospital bills of the injured victims including the family of the deceased that have been left behind with no hope?

These are the questions they have put before the Ministery of Lands and Natural Resources and would be glad to receive feedback on how the fine will be utilised because it is of great interest to them.
