Some commercial drivers in parts of Accra Monday morning began a sit-down strike in protest against numerous levies and taxes imposed on petroleum products by the government, resulting in an increase in fuel prices.
At Gbawe and Mallam in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality, many commuters were stranded along the shoulders of the road while those who had already boarded commercial vehicles were forced to disembark.
Some Ghana Private Roads and Transport Union (GPRTU) station officers blocked roads with car tyres and other metallic weapons to prevent the passage of loaded commercial vehicles.
However, the Western Region GPRTU members are yet to join the strike as they are yet to meet with government representatives and other stakeholders to deliberate on their demands.
The Vice-Chairman of GPRTU, Mr Frank Eshun, speaking on the Jolly Breakfast Show (JBS) on Monday, December 6, indicated that the heads of the association will be meeting the president to negotiate on their terms of condition and if there is no positive outcome, then they will join the strike.
He indicated the rise in fuel prices in the country has overburdened drivers as they do not make profit from their daily sales due to exorbitant fuel prices.
Also, they will gladly join the strike if there is no positive outcome from their negotiation with the government so residents of the Western Region who depend on them should prepare for the inconvenience.
