TV3’s broadcaster and NewDay host, Mr Johnnie Beresford Hughes has taken a swipe at public sector workers seeking contract extension to stay in office when they are suppose to be on retirement.
Speaking on JohnniesBite on TV3 Newday on August 23, monitored by GhanaPlus.com, he said such persons are a failure.
According to him, any person who has served this country for twenty years and more and still needs such contract extension to prove him/herself is a failure.
“……And I say of you have sere your country for more than 20years, 25year, 30years, 38years and you still needs three to four years to prove a point you are a failure. I miss no words about it, ” Mr Hughes.
“ If you have sere your country and within all that time, the full 90mins of play, you couldn’t have an impact, You want extra time to prove yourself you are a failed player,” he emphasized.
GES Deputy Director-General gets 1year contract extension, due for retirement
Mr Hughes was reacting to the contract extension granted the Deputy Director-General (Management Services) of the Ghana Education Service by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and its accompanying statement from the Pre-Tertiary workers in the country.
Mr Anthony Boateng was awarded a one-year contract extension effective August 17, 2022 through to August 16, 2023 upon the request of the Minister of Education, Mr Yaw Osei Edutwum.
A statement from the Presidency, signed by the Secretary to the President, Nana Asante Bediatuo Asante said the Mr Boateng is “expected to continue his current role and assist in the development of the National Education Institute as approved by cabinet”.

However, a statement from Pre-Tertiary Education workers have asked Mr Boateng to decline the offer and also called on the Director General of the Service to direct all retired persons to proceed on mandatory retirement.
They added “if by September 30, 22 are still at post, we will all on all our members to disregard directives issued by these persons”.
