TV3’s broadcaster and NewDay host,Mr Johnnie Beresford Hughes has reacted to the decision by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to seek support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for its programmes due to the current financial difficulties.

Speaking in a twitter post sighted by GhanaPlus.com on Friday, July 1, he said the President chose no other day but the day in which Ghana gained it republican status to go and beg for help.

“The Akufo-Addo led gov’t chose no other day than our REPUBLIC DAY, to announced its decision to return to the IMF, begging for help? Awwwwww, Nkrumah where you dey? E no be you talk say Ghana is free forever? #JohnniesBite,” Mr Hughes’ twitter post reads.

Akufo-Addo finally turns to IMF for bail out

Government of Ghana, early today on July 1, a day also celebrated as a republic day announced its decision to seek support from the IMF in the face of the current economic difficulties.

A statement from the Ministry of Information, signed by the Minister, Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has authorized the Finance Minister, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta to begin formal engagement with the international organization for support.

The President of the Republic of Ghana has authorized Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to commence formal engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) inviting the Fund to support an economic programe put together by the Government of Ghana.

“This follows a telephone conversation between the President and the IMF Managing Director, Ms Kristalina Georgieva , conveying Ghana’s decision to engage with the fund,” the statement said.

The engagement is to seek balance of payment support as part of a broader effort quicken Ghana’s build back in the face of induced by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine crises, ” the statement added.

The statement dated July 1, said the President has the support of cabinet over the decision.
