New Patriotic Party stalwart Nana Akomea has expressed confidence in Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s political future, asserting the party’s 2024 electoral defeat doesn’t preclude a successful presidential run in 2028.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Akomea cited Ghana’s electoral history where rejected candidates later returned to power. “Many presidents, including John Mahama, were rejected while in office but won subsequently,” he stated.

Akomea highlighted a recurring pattern in Ghana’s Fourth Republic where defeated candidates often regain power. “Since 2000, presidents typically handed power to former opponents: Rawlings to Kufuor, Kufuor to Mills, and Akufo-Addo to Mahama,” he noted. The former NPP Communications Director framed this as evidence that political setbacks need not be terminal for committed candidates.

He urged party unity during regrouping, emphasizing Bawumia remains electorally viable if he maintains national relevance. Akomea’s comments come amid NPP internal debates about leadership following January’s electoral loss, with the party having scheduled its flagbearer congress for January 2026.
