Ranking Member of Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament, Mr Kwame Agbodza has reacted to the banning of tricycles otherwise known as aboboyaa on high ways in Accra.

Speaking to the media on the sideline of Parliament, he said the Greater Accra Minister , Mr Henry Quartey was overstepping the authority under his watch.

Mr Agbodza said there were no such laws in the country which permit the minister to ban aboboyaa or any other vehicle from plying any street and called on the minister to mention one if there was any.

He revealed the National Road Safety Authority and the Ministry of Roads and Transport were the only state entities cloth with such powers and not the minister.

Accra don’t enough waste plant -Agbodza

Apart from that, Mr Agbodza said Accra do not have enough waste treatment facilities and that explains why aboboyaa drivers had to use the the  motor way in particular to get their waste to a plant at Tema.

“My brothers and sister, you are aware the reasons why the aboboyaa are doing that is because that whey the treatment plant is. We don’t have enough treatment plant within Accra itself. So if you see them on the high way going to Tema, it simply because there is no other way they can dump it”.

“So if the minister says somewhere next year they are going to stop them, let him be aware that he  over stepping the authority under his watch,” Mr Agbodza said.

“There is no law in this country that gives power to regional minister to determine which vehicle which drives on which roads  That is with the purview of the  National Road safety Authority and the Ministry of roads and transport . “The only way you should believe what the regional minister is saying is if he can quote a law that backs it. District Assemblies and Regional coordinating councils cannot make laws and say vehicles cannot drive on a particular road,” he added.
