The former President and 2020 flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress(NDC), John Dramani Mahama has taken on the so-called economic experts in the country over their inability to criticize the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo and his government.
In a twitter post sighted by GhanaPlus.com, he said the so-called economic expert who criticized his administration had suddenly gone mute under this government creating the impression that all was well for them and that the perception of hardship in the country was his doing.
“Our people are galled by the hypocrisy of so-called economic experts, asking them in 2016 to forget about economic statistics and look at the escalation of prices of cement & other products on the market, and then today hearing the same experts in gov’t hold-up statistics, inflation etc., and say that life is better for them. And that the perception of hardship in Ghana is a creation of Mahama.”

Akufo-Addo’s poor economic management has contributed to high cost of living – Mahama
Former President, John Dramani Mahama has been critical of the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led administration over what he described as poor management of the economy and blamed him for the current economic hardships the country is faced with.
At a Thank You Tour in the Bono Region some weeks ago, he said the country was going in the wrong direction and the cost of living was extremely high.
“My counterparts are accusing me of peddling falsehoods with regards to our living standards but we are all living in this country. Clearly, the country is going in the wrong direction. It’s going downhill and the cost of goods are extremely high. I’m not the one saying it.”
He mentioned “a bag of maize now is more than GH₵400 but when we were in power, it never went beyond GH₵120 but today, go and ask the poultry farmers, they are all selling the birds because they can’t afford to buy maize”.
“The cost of a bag of cement was GH₵27 when we were in power, but today it’s almost more than GH₵50 per bag. Do you think it’s Mahama who would go and tell people about the cost of living? But my opponents are accusing me of peddling falsehoods with the economy”.
He used the opportunity to called on the president to organize an economic forum to solicit varied views to address the hardship confronting the country.
Mahama can’t lecture me on economic management, he was abysmal and disastrous
However, reacting to the comment, the President said the former President superintended over a worse economy hence was not in the best position to advise him on the matter.
“I wonder whether this statement was made tongue in cheek by the former president. When you look at the record that this political leader, who can accuse my government of mismanagement, there are a few facts that when you put on the table to compare his performance and mine, it would tell you whether what I am offering the people is economic mismanagement.”
He continued, “I wonder what words should we describe his (Mahama) stewardship of Ghana. It is an unmitigated disaster, that’s what I would call him.”
