NDC Seeks Forensic Audit of Voters’ Register Amid Protests; Peace Council Urges Patience
Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, has announced that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will explore all available avenues to compel the Electoral Commission (EC) to allow a forensic audit of the country’s voters’ register.
Speaking during an interview with TV3 amid ongoing demonstrations against the EC, Forson stated that the party is prepared to recall Parliament if necessary to address the issue.
“We are committed to ensuring that a forensic audit is conducted,“ Forson told Eric Mawuena Egbeta. “If it becomes necessary to reconvene Parliament to address this matter, then we will.”
The NDC’s demonstrations, which are taking place simultaneously across all 16 regions of Ghana, are aimed at expressing concerns over alleged discrepancies in the voters’ register.
The party had previously requested an independent audit, but the EC denied this request, leading to widespread protests.
In response to the NDC’s demands, the Peace Council has advised the party to allow the EC to address the identified errors in the register before pushing for a forensic audit.
Rev. Dr Ernest Adu Gyamfi of the Peace Council emphasized that the focus should be on rectifying any mistakes first before considering additional measures.
“The best approach is to present any identified errors, allow for their correction, and then assess the updated register,“ Dr. Gyamfi said.
“If we call for an audit before correcting these errors, it may lead to further complications and delay our progress.”
The NDC’s ongoing protests underscore the party’s insistence on transparency and accuracy in the electoral process as they seek to ensure that the integrity of the voters’ register is upheld.
The conflict between the NDC and the EC highlights the broader challenges facing Ghana’s electoral system as the country prepares for future elections.
