Editor-In-Chief of the New Crusading Guide, Abdul Malik Kwaku Baako, has described the petition by the Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Abraham Amaliba to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to investigate and possibly charge Agric Minister Bryan Acheampong for his utterances that the NPP would not hand over power to the NDC, as laughable and comical.
Mr Baako wondered if the lawyers in the NDC who he described as great legal practitioners agreed that this petition should be sent to the CID.
Speaking on Peace FM Kokorokoo on Wednesday, April 12, he said “I don’t get the understanding that Bryan Acheampong was saying that come what may, if ‘we lose the elections we won’t hand over’.
“Rather, I could hear him suggesting that the difficulties and the challenges in the economy, ‘we are addressing them in such a manner that will enhance the NPP’s chances’.
“That is my understanding. As I say, all of us can’t think along the same line, that is why it is democracy but when you move one step forward to invite the Police and especially if you are a lawyer.
“The NDC has great lawyers there, some of them are former Attorney Generals and Deputy Attorney Generals, forget about one’s political stance on them in terms of their history and identity, but individually, great lawyers in there, no joke and they all feel that this speech of Bryan Acheampong is a target for Police investigations? And that possibly, it can travel the full length to the court and sanctions can be applied? To be honest with you, those inviting the Police to investigate and possibly charge him, it is a bit laughable and comical.”
In the petition dated April 11 2023, Mr Amaliba said “That Your Petitioner says that the said Hon Bryan Acheampong continued to say that they — NPP will show the NDC that the NPP have the men, and that the NPP will do everything possible — fair or foul means to remain in power come what may in the 2024 general elections. I enclose herein, audios and videos of the utterances of Hon Bryan Acheampong for your perusal.
“That in the estimation of Your Petitioner and those of the general public, the statements uttered by Hon Bryan Acheampong could be interpreted to mean that the NPP has conceived a grand scheme to subvert the will of the people of Ghana in the 2024 elections and any attempt to resist them would be met with violence.
“Your Petitioner wishes to remind you of Hon Bryan Acheampong’s unilateral and illegal deployment of NPP hoodlums garbed in National Security Operatives uniforms to assault the Hon Sam Dzata George, innocent electorates and maimed some NDC supporters in the Ayawaso West Wuogon By-elections.
“Your Petitioner says that given the infamous and unenviable track record of Hon Bryan Acheampong in organising NPP hoodlums to unleash violence on Ghanaians, his statements on the 8th day of April, 2023 border on national security threats and democracy and should not be taken lightly.”
Bryan Acheampong had assured members of the NPP that the economy would bounce back.
He said the government was working to secure a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Hopefully, he said, by June this year the deal will be closed, a situation that will lead to the resurgence of the economy.
Speaking to members of the NPP in Kwahu after a health walk on Saturday, April 8, the Abetifi Lawmaker said “NDC party will collapse. If the NDC dares to use threats, Violence and foolishness in the 2024 election we will let them know we have the men. We will show them that we have the men. We have the men.
“It will never happen that we the NPP will stand on a platform to hand over power to the NDC. It will never happen! We will make sure NPP remain in government at all cost”.
The former Minister of State in Charge of National Security added “Now with the way things are changing the economy will bounce back again, I am telling you that we are going to come around that curve and we are going to win the 2024 elections hands down.”
The National Organiser of the NPP Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) has also petitioned the CID to arrest former President John Dramani Mahama and the National Chairman of the party Johnson Asiedu Nketia for alleged treasonable comments they made.
The NPP said Mr Mahama had on many occasions described the 2024 general elections as one of “do or die” for the NDC.
The party said “It is, in fact, a no secret that the NDC has always resorted to violence and intimidation against their opponents during the conduct of general elections, and this was summed up by their 2024 presumptive presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama. He has stated emphatically that: ‘NDC has revolutionary root, and that when it comes to unleashing violence, nobody can beat us [NDC] in unleashing violence’.”
The governing party also said “Other leading members of the NDC, including Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the national chairman of the Party, have made similar threatening and malicious comments. Indeed, following his election as National Chairman, Asiedu Nketiah stated in his victory speech that, the NDC would fight the 2024 general elections to win a second independence for Ghana, and that, they are prepared to sacrifice everything including their lives for an NDC victory.”
