Resign as a matter of national duty –Kwabena Donkor tells Ofori-Atta

Former Minister for Power in the erstwhile John Dramani Mahama administration, Dr Kwabena Donkor has admonished the Minister of Finance, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta to as a matter of national duty resign.

According to him, his resignation has become necessary to give the President a free hand to choose someone to lead the country’s negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“It is in the light of this that I call on honourable Ken Ofori-Atta as a matter of national duty and in order to save the little honour lift that he does the right to tender in his resignation. He can still at as an advisor to the government in the negotiations but not as minister responsible for finance,” Dr Kwabena Donkor said in the interview monitored by GhanaPlus.com on TV3 News@10.

The Member of Parliament for the Pru Constituency in the Bono East Region made the call while speaking to Journalist on the sidelines of  Parliament on Thursday, July 8.

He explained, the Finance Minister cannot lead the negotiations since he does not believe in going to the IMF adding “A minister who categorically states that we will never go to the IMF cannot be dragged unwilling to IMF to lead our negotiations. If we love our country, we need somebody who will believe in what he or she will be doing to lead the negotiations”.

Akufo-Addo  direct Ofori-Atta to go IMF for bail out

The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on July 1, authorized the Mr of Finance and Economic Planning, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta to begin discussions with the IMF to support government programmes in the wake of current economic hardships, something the Minister has consistently said it will never happen.

Discussions have since begun with the President himself leading the Ghana team on the first day.
