“You are proud you have done little” – Asah-Asante on Annor Dompreh’s galamsey comment

Political Science Lecturer, Dr Kwame  Asah-Asante has called out the Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri Constituency, Mr Frank Aannor Dompreh over his galamsey(illegal mining) comment on the floor in Parliament on Monday, September 2.  

The MP who doubles as the Majority Chief Whip of Parliament whiles contributing to discussions on a statement release by the Ghana Water Company concerning galamsey and the adverse effect it has had on the operation said the opposition National Democratic Congress  (NDC) had polluted Ghana’s water bodies more than the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“I was very happy when the Minority Leader challenged us that we will debate this matter and the culprit will be mentioned. In fact, we are ready to debate now. If we are to look and investigate both sides of the House.

“You have had the opportunity to rule this country before. I can tell you – You polluted the water more than us. You polluted the water more than us,” Mr Annor Dompreh said.

But Speaking on Newspaper Review on JoyNews on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 monitored by GhanaPlus.com Dr Asah-Asante said the comment by the MP was unfortunate.

He noted what he and the other MPs should concern themselves with is the reality which threatens the very existence of the people they represent adding that water is life.

“………..You are so proud that you have done little. And who measures what you have done. The effect is what we see at the Renal Department, the effect is what the head of Atomic Energy Commission is saying is cancer that takes a long time. Today you consume something which is infected and you get the effect in 10years time. This should occupy the attention of the MP and the government and the people of this country”.

“We think that money is everything, let me go for money. If you go for money there is no society call Ghana, where will you live, you will run away. Look at this big state, if everybody is gone or everybody is sick, Are you sure you can be here? Because nobody will attend to you, you will not be able to get anything so please let us be responsible.

Let us make sure that we stand up against people who do this because water is life and now that water is being threatened to the extent that now the capacity of the Ghana Water Company has been reduce from 70% to 40 and they are saying that if the situation does not change, we will hit 20 and zero ultimately”.

“Look, we are in difficult times and this is the time that we should stop playing the ostrich and call people out and make sure that anybody who is involved in this is apprehended and handed over to the police and that those politicians who want to cash in on this, we call them out and vote  against them so that we know that we are doing a serious work, otherwise, look, a day will come that this problem will engulf all of us and we will not be anywhere on the surface of this country, it’s unfortunate,” Dr Asah Asante said .
