Geh Geh exposes truth about ‘yahoo yahoo’ and the illusion of wealth

Nigerian comedian Geh Geh has shed light on the notorious internet scam, commonly known as “yahoo yahoo” in Nigeria, during his appearance on Nedu’s Honest Brunch podcast.

He revealed how individuals in certain circles project a wealthy lifestyle that often turns out to be nothing more than a facade, hiding the deeper, darker truth of internet fraud.

“You see the flashy lifestyle, the expensive cars, and all the big talk,” Geh Geh began. “But the truth is, even with all those luxury cars, many of them don’t actually have money.

They’ll own cars they can’t afford to fuel or maintain. I used to think they were really rich, but when you look closely, the lifestyle is just a facade.” This highlights the deceptive nature of the “yahoo yahoo” lifestyle, where appearances are often used to cover up the lack of genuine wealth.

Geh Geh also explained the inner workings of “yahoo yahoo” scams, particularly romance scams, which are among the most prevalent forms of internet fraud.

“It’s a process,” he elaborated, describing how scammers target unsuspecting victims on social media platforms like Facebook.

The scammers initiate a conversation, build trust, and eventually make the victim fall in love. Once the relationship is established, the scammer hands the victim over to another individual, often referred to as the “shaman,” who handles the financial exploitation.

He explained the typical tactics employed by these fraudsters: “They’d use fake identities, claiming to be in the military, based in war zones like Afghanistan, or posing as a Nigerian prince who needs urgent help. It’s all about crafting a believable story.”

These tactics are designed to prey on the victim’s emotions, creating a false sense of urgency and trust, leading them to part with their money.

Reflecting on the toll of this lifestyle, Geh Geh spoke candidly about the mental and emotional strain involved in such scams.

“It’s a stressful way to live. You hardly sleep, you’re constantly thinking and working on the next move, and in the end, it’s not even as lucrative as people think. Honestly, it’s harder to make money that way than to just earn it legitimately,” he concluded.
