Controversial radio and television counselor, Rev. Cyril George Carstensen Lutterodt, popularly known as Counselor Lutterodt has described as a error the combination of Ghanaian customary marriage and that of the civil or white wedding.
According to him, undertaking a civil marriage ceremony after the Ghanaian traditional marriage nullifies the latter adding no one has the right to marriage twice in the country.
“Immediately you finish Ghanaian tradition marriage and you decide to do civil marriage, you nullify all that you. Immediately you finish Ghanaian traditional marriage and you go for white wedding it is nullified, it not recognized under the law because nobody has the right to marry twice in this country”.
The popular counselor who is also a Rev Minister made the remarks on HeartBay on TV3 NewDay on Friday, June 25 2021, monitored by GhanaPlus.com.
He noted Ghana has only three marriages, the customary also known as the traditional marriage, the Mohammadan marriage practiced by Muslims and the civil marriage or otherwise known as the white wedding out of which couples are expected to choose one.
Civil Marriage is for the security of the woman
He indicated civil marriage was only for the security of the woman and not necessarily an accepted practice as far as the Ghanaian marriage setting was concerned.
“It is for the security of the woman, is your fear. …………… the wedding takes you out of the tradition and gives you to the law, one man, one woman, kyem pe, 50% of properties”.
“And so If I finish my traditional marriage and then I decide to make a decision to register my marriage for 21days under the law, I nullify the customary marriage that is why in the marriage register they ask you when you marry,” he emphasized.
