CAF Champions League: Pirates, Berkane, JSK, Red Arrows, Enyimba and Motema Pembe through to the next stage
The Second Preliminary Round of the 2021-22 TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup was concluded on Sunday (24 October 2021), and the teams will now wait to know their opponents in the Additional Second Preliminary Round on Tuesday’s draw.
Former champions RS Berkane, big guns JS Kabylie, Orlando Pirates and Enyimba were among those who qualified to the next round, where the qualified teams will face sides relegated from the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League Second Preliminary Round.
Motema Pembe 2-1 AS Kigali
DR Congo’s Motema Pembe repeated their first leg 2-1 victory over Rwanda’s AS Kigali to qualify winning 4-2 on aggregate.
In Kinshasa, Katulondi Kati Kati opened the score for Motema Pembe after 26 minutes, but for Pierre Kwizera to restore parity for the visitors on the brink of halftime.
But Karim Kimvuidi put the hosts ahead again three minutes after the break to ensure his side’s path to the next round.
Enyimba 3-0 Diambars
In Aba, Nigeria’s Enyimba cruised to the next round in style, beating Senegal’s Diambars 3-0 in the evening and 4-0 on aggregate.
Omoyoele Tosin Abraham broke the deadlock as early as the first minute to ease The People’s Elephant nerves. Enyimba went to the break 2-0 up after Victor Mbaoma doubled their lead at the half hour mark.
Diambars had to finish the game with ten men after Bacary Sane was shown the red card three minutes from time. And Enyimba made use of the numerical advantage to add a third goal right at the end through Kalu Samuel.
Primeiro de Agosto 0-0 Red Arrows
Red Arrows saved Zambia clubs blushes by reaching the next round, holding their hosts Primeiro de Agosto to a goalless draw in Angola’s capital Luanda.
Red Arrows made use of their home 1-0 win last week to reach the next round.
Orlando Pirates 1-0 Diables Noirs
Happy Jele scored what proved to be the game’s lone goal after 17 minutes, as South Africa’s Orland Pirates cruised narrowly to the next round, beating Congo’s Diables Noirs 1-0 on the evening and on aggregate as well.
Jele’s goal in Johannesburg was what separated both sides after the first leg ended goalless last weekend.
RS Berkane 4-0 US Ben Guerdane
The 2020 Confederation Cup champions RS Berkane of Morocco cruised to the next round after completing the double over Tunisia’s US Ben Guerdane in Berkane. The Oranges won 4-0 at home and 5-0 on aggregate after winning 1-0 away last weekend.
Ibrahim El Bahraoui scored in either half to highlight Berkane’s victory. He opened the scoring after 38 minutes before completing his brace in the 74th minute. Four minutes later Bakr El Helali made it 3-0, with Soufiane El Moudane adding the fourth two minutes from time as Berkane qualified in style.
JS Kabylie 2-1 AS FAR
Algeria’s JS Kabylie ousted their Moroccan neighbors AS FAR after completing the double, beating them 2-1 in Tizi Ouzou. JS KAbylie qualified winning 3-1 on aggregate.
After a goalless first half, Ali Haroun opened the score for JSK after 56 minutes, to double his side aggregate advantage. But Cameroonian Lambert Araina scored an immediate equalizer a couple of minute later to give the Moroccan Army side some hope.
Deep into injury time, Haroun completed his personal brace to handle JSK victory at home that secured their next-round place.
