Hugo Broos says South Africa were not prepared to face Ghana in 2022 World Cup qualifier

South Africa coach Hugo Broos has disclosed his outfit were not to face Ghana in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Ghana last year.

The Bafana Bafana missed out on a spot in the 2022 World Cup after a controversial penalty decision in their loss to Ghana.

South Africa failed to pick up the point they needed to book their place in the African World Cup play-offs after being beaten 1-0 by Ghana at the Cape Coast Stadium.

They made a formal complaint to FIFA after the match, appealing for a replay after a series of questionable decisions but the world football governing body dismissed their request to have their World Cup qualifier against Ghana replayed.

“The challenges, I think, [that came] after the qualifiers for the World Cup, we evaluated the team and saw that there were some weaknesses, certainly in the game against Ghana,” Broos said.

“The team was not ready to play such a game

“We saw that Ghana started the game very aggressively and we didn’t have an answer to that, so that was one of the things we saw, and therefore we started to look for other players and see where we could improve the team.”

Ghana will take on Nigeria at the Cape Coast Stadium on March 25 in the first leg before travelling to Abuja for the return leg on March 29.
