The Head of Department History and Political Science Department at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Samuel Adu-Gyamfi has advised the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for the Suame Constituency to wait for a better day to throw his support behind the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia if he feels he is the right person to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2024.
“Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah if you feel that Dr Muhamadu Bawumia is your choice and he is excellence and you believe that he can lead, you wait for better day to make an argument for him specifically”.
The Political Science Lecturer made the comment in an interview on TV3 NewDay on Friday, April 9 monitored by GhanaPlus.com.
His comment was in reaction to a point of view shared by the MP and Leader of Government Business in Parliament concerning who leads the party in 2024.
It would be unwise to have another Akan to lead NPP
The MP had said it would be unwise for the party to elect another Akan as its leader and flagbearer having had three Akans including the current President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo lead the party previously.
His point of view, he noted would enable the party demystify the public perception that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was an AKan party.
His comment has however, sparked some rage across the length and breadth of the country, his party people inclusive.
Speaking on the development, Dr Adu-Gyamfi said although the MP intended to throw his support for the Vice President,he could have waited for a better time to do so.
Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu’s comment meant to set agenda for Bawumia
He noted he can say unequivocally that Mr Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu’s comment was meant to set an agenda for the Vice President and to disadvantage others who equally have the interest in leading the party in 2024 however foiled because of the ethic path he sought to toe.
“I think he has invited us to ethnic party, clearly you see that he sought to disadvantage one and give one advantage but I think that it has not work, his strategy did not work. He is a sharp communicator, smart person and just as we all know very intelligent and you can read , I mean you can infer from what he said that he was setting a grand agenda for Dr Bawumia’s camp, he was setting a grand agenda for them you can infer but unfortunately because he choose the ethnic,” he said .
