The costs of flights to foreign countries may soon rise due to the recent announcements by President Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo to open the borders on 1st September 2020.
Ghana’s borders had been closed since March 2020, when COVID-19 had been declared a global pandemic and shortly after Ghana recorded its first coronavirus case.
Although the president provided opportunities for Ghanaian citizens stranded abroad to be brought back to the country at an agreed fee, many were unable to meet the requirements and continue to remain abroad.
On 16th August 2020, during an address, the president announced that the country would be re-opening its borders both land and air from 1st September, adding that each individual to arrive in the country would be screened and tested.
Ghanaians to pay more for flights
According to AttractiveMustapha.com, British Airways, KLM, Turkish, and Turkish Airline ticket prices have increased in prices which would be sure to spark flames among Ghanaians in the coming weeks.
The cheapest ticket ranges around 9000 Ghana cedis minimum on British airways, while Turkish Airlines and Brussels Airline which are frequently used by Ghanaians also cost around 8000 Ghana cedis.
Foreign countries offer discounts
Despite this other countries are offering discounts to tourists to persuade them to visit their countries to revitalize their tourism industry. According to forbes.com, the Italian Mediterranean island of Sicily in a bid to lure back foreign tourists after the lockdown is planning to discount half the price of plane tickets and pay for one of every three nights in hotels in a €50 million scheme to revive its battered tourism industry.
Aside from this Mexico is offering discount prices on car rentals and tourist spots, Cyprus is offering free accommodation, food, and medical costs if tourist contract the disease during their stay and many other countries offering similar conditions all in a boost to improve tourism.
Ghana, however, is yet to state if any discounts may be offered to tourists who visit the country in the coming months.
