HISTORIC: Magical Samuel Boadu leads Hearts to the Promised Land
Samuel Boadu has made history by becoming the first coach to win the Ghana Premier League title with Accra Hearts of Oak in 12 years following their 1-1 stalemate with Liberty Professionals at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Daniel Afriyie Barnieh’s first half strike was cancelled by Kwame Paul late in the second half to share the soils at the nation’s Wembley.
The draw has seen the Phobians cruising to the coveted league title that had eluded the side for over a decade.
Hearts maintained their position on top of the table with 61 points, 4 points away from second-placed Asante Kotoko who were beaten by 2-1 at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Stadium in Bechem.
The draw, not only ensured Hearts maintained their stay on top of the table but also ended the side’s 12-year league title-less run with Boadu being the magician to make that history.
The Phobians last won the Ghana Premier League title under Serbian trainer Costa Papic in 2009 and have since been chasing a second which had to wait until the arrival of Boadu.
Boadu, the fourth manager to have handled the Phobians this season provided the magic wand that has seen them end their title-less run, after joining the club a few games before the start of the second round.
The Phobians had changed three managers; Edward Odoom, Samuel Nii Noi and Costa Papic, before settling on Boadu who has stabilized the side since his arrival.
The win over Liberty Professionals marks a new record for the Phobians who have gone 14 games unbeaten in the league and 16 games in all competitions.
Hearts last suffered a defeat in the league to Dreams FC at the Theatre of Dreams by 2-0 and have since remained unbeaten in all competitions.
Despite chasing and having hopes in winning the double following their qualification to the Round of 8 in the MTN FA Cup, the Phobians have jealously fought to win the league title to the shock of many.
Boadu’s side started the league from 17th spot on the log and moved thirteen places up to 4th spot before the end of the first round and have been stupendously supersonic in the second round, cruising to the title.
After winning the title in 2009, the Ghana Premier League title has been a preserve of Aduana Stars, Berekum Chelsea, Asante Kotoko, Wa All Stars and AshantGold SC.
The Phobians have endured the pain of seeing all these sides, including their bitterest rivals, winning the league title while they watch in awe.
The arrival of Boadu, predictably, has served as the impetus for the Phobians to serve their fans the sweetest meal, winning the league title and re-living their glorious days.
Despite having a game in hand, the Phobians are runaway winners of the title following the defeat to Asante Kotoko to Bechem United.
Hearts will be playing WAFA in Sogakope next Sunday but have already been crowned winners of the Ghana Premier League title.
