43,051 candidates sit for exams in Western Region today – Skyy Power FM
The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) starts today, August 7, 2023, with a total of 600,714 candidates across the country.
The papers being written on the first day are English and Religious and Moral Education (RME).
Forty-three thousand and fifty-one (43,051) students are writing the exams in the Western Region.
Out of this number, twenty-one thousand six hundred and seventy-one (21,671) are males whiles twenty-one thousand three hundred and eighty (21,380) are females.
This information was revealed by the Western Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Madam Felicia Agyebia Okine when she was speaking on the Jolly Breakfast Show on Skyy Power FM.
Speaking on student preparation, she said the students are well prepared and not perturbed as they used to be during this period.
She added that there are a total of thousand three hundred and thirteen schools participating in this year’s at Hundred Thirty-Four (134) Centres where students will be writing the exams across the Western Region.
She said they have advised invigilators and students on examination malpractice and debunked rumours that the private part of students are to be thoroughly searched before exams.
The Skyy News team was at the Fijai Senior High School (SHS), one of the centres to monitor the situation and atmosphere.
Nine (9) schools were writing at the centre with a total of four hundred and seven (407) students, comprising one hundred and ninety-seven (197) males and two hundred and ten (210) females.
Students were seated by 8:30 AM, and the whole atmosphere was calm for the exams. Speaking to Skyy News, some students said they were well prepared and not perturbed.
Meanwhile, out of the 600,714 nationwide candidates, 300,323 are males and 300,391 are females from 18,993 participating schools.
The number of candidates that registered for this year’s BECE was 8.8 per cent higher than the year 2022 entry figure of 552,276. With regard to the BECE for private candidates, a total entry figure of 1,743 candidates was recorded.
This is made up of 889 males and 854 females. This year’s figure is 5.4 per cent higher than the entry figure of 1,132 for 2022.
