Convener and leading members of the #FixTheCountry campaign, Oliver Barker –Vormawor and Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah together with Onua TV host, Captain Godsbrain Smart and one Benjamin Darko has served a notice to the Ghana Police Service to hold a demonstration in Ghana’s capital carrying weapons, the Ghana Police Service has said.
The four also notified the service to permit them speak to the nation through the state broadcaster, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).
On the said demonstration, the four will also engage the services of a private security company instead of the Ghana Police Service.
The above was contained in a statement released by the Ghana Police Service on Wednesday, June 1.
The statement signed by the Chief Inspector, Bright Kwabena Danso of the Greater Accra Regional Public Affairs Unit sighted by GhanaPlus.com said the said notice was received on May 29.
According to them, the intended demonstration, a three-day demonstration was scheduled to be embarked upon from June 4.
However, the service noted the intended protest is in conflict with the country’s public order act hence will not be able to provide protection for such.
“However in this case the service is of the view that the nature and the character of the demonstration as intended is inconsistent with the public order act”.
“We are therefore, unable to provide for a demonstration which is in flagrant violation of the public order act (1994)(49) and has the potential to result in a breach the public order and public safety”.
The Police said they have reached out to the organizers of the said protest to reconsider their proposal for a more peaceful one.
The service assured “We will like to assure the public that the Ghana Police is ready and willing to provide necessary protection for any lawful demonstration in the country”.
