Calm returns to Wassa Akropong after residents clash with police

Police officers at Akropong District Command at about 8:00 PM on Thursday, Febraury 22, shot at a gentleman identified as KOFI when they were on a Patrol within the town after they suspected him to be carrying a substance believed to be marijuana

According to reports, the victim after sighting the police began running and in an attempt to catch up with him, the police shot at his waist.

The news upon reaching the town sparked outrage among residents who stormed the police station and made them call a reinforcement team from the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.

This made the police use brute force to calm the situation and some residents were even shot with rubber bullets.

The Municipal Chief Executive of the Amenfi East Municipality, Mr Frederick Korankye giving an update on the Jolly Breakfast Show indicated the police were on high alert due to the recent robbery cases leading them to engage the victim during their routine patrol.

He said the incident was unfortunate but calm has been restored and they are engaging the police and family of the victim to see the way forward.
