Court fines Sammy Gyamfi GHS 500k for defamation, set to appeal
Sammy Gyamfi defamed Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Minister for Energy and MP for Manhyia South constituency, according to a judgment issued on October 13, 2022, in the case of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh v. Sammy Gyamfi by the High Court, Accra, General Jurisdiction 12, presided over by Justice Charles Gyamfi Danquah.
When Sammy Gyamfi, at a press conference in June 2019, stated that Seidu Yakubu MBA, suspected of being involved in the kidnapping of the 2 Canadian girls in the year 2019, is the errand boy of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
The court has therefore awarded damages of 500, 000 GHC. He has also been ordered to publish a retraction and apology.
Sammy Gyamfi speaking in an interview with Adom FM monitored by skyypowerfm.com indicated that his statement on the MP was not defamatory because he only alleged the said suspect is an errand boy of Matthew Opoku Prempreh.
He said, “If the court has taken a decision that’s fine, but the court did not use the evidence provided before to give a fair judgement.”
Sammy Gyamfi revealed that he will challenge the decision of the court by filing an appeal.
