At the #OccupyJulorBiHouse demonstration that took place near the Jubilee House, protesters were detained.
The protesters in black and red could be seen seated in a bus in a video that Oliver Barker Vormawor shared on social media.
”We are unsure of their plans for us,” he continued.
He mentioned their dissatisfaction with the police’s activities.
He said that the nation has turned the police into weapons to disperse protesters, adding that “they have no right to arrest demonstrators in the nation.” We did not agree to participate in this democracy. There is no democracy here.
In order to help the protesters who had been arrested, Mr. Vormawor requested that attorneys appear at the police headquarters.
He also called on the public and media for support.
The Accra-based civil society group organising the protest, Democracy Hub, had earlier notified the Ghana Police Service of their planned demonstration on Nkrumah Memorial Day to call on “the President and members of the Economic Management Team to #FixTheCountry in light of the level of economic mismanagement and theft that has engulfed our government from the highest levels.”
But on the eve of the event, the police secured an injunction from the court barring the protest from moving forth.
The organisers responded by saying they hadn’t received the court papers and so had the right to hold the event.
The police, however, argued that it had acted in the interests of the organisers’ solicitors and advised the populace to abstain from taking part in an “illegal” rally.
The event took place on Thursday, although it was brief.
Police have had a strong presence at the Jubilee House ever since the arrest.
Numerous police officers in riot gear and crowd control vehicles have gathered in a queue in front of the government building.
