ECG disconnects UMaT over GH¢1.3 million debt – Skyy Power FM

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected the University of Mines and Technology (UMAT) in Tarkwa in the Western Region over GHS1.2 million debt.

The Western Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) for ECG, Mr Benjamin Quarcoo, speaking to Skyy News said they now visiting institutions in the Tarkwa Municipality owning ECG.

This comes after the ECG task force embarked on a massive disconnection exercise in a bid to mobilise revenue.

He said Johnson Mining Company that was also owning an amount of GHS1.2 million paid their debt upon their arrival.

He stated that the reason the institution’s bills amass to such large amounts over time is that they don’t settle their bills in full when they are presented to them.

“Because they are our customers, we make some pay in instalments, so for example, if their bill is Ghs50 they can pay half or more, but here is the case some will pay GHs10 every month, meaning GHS40 is being accumulated every month, the reason for the high bills.”

He said some businesses took action to settle their debt after they made the announcement on March 20, while others made partial payments, but the amount they have accumulated thus far is not encouraging.

He said, “Most of the companies who got disconnected have paid their monies. We look forward to seeing companies who are yet to get disconnected to walk to our offices and make a payment but they did not, the reason we are on the field to take this action.”
