A leading member of the National Democratic Congress and Former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Mr Kojo Twum Boafo has descended heavily on the Wesley Girls High Schools following the decision by the school not to allow Muslim students fast while in school.
Speaking on Pan African Television’s Alhaji and Alhaji programme on Saturday May 8, monitored by GhanaPlus.com, he said Ghana was a circular nation and as such everyone deserves to be treated equally and urged the school, the headmistress especially, to put an end to the show of racism.
Mr Twum Boafo who indicated he had a son whose mother was a Muslim, said he would want his son to have same opportunity given to Christian children should his son decide to follow his mothers religion and practice same someday.
According to him, his son deserves same treatment because he pays taxes to the state adding the state does not reduce taxes for people because they belong to a particular religion.
“ I have a son, my son is called Rahim, his mother is a Muslim……We live in a country that is circular so those religious begot, look it is very personal because if my son chooses to follow his mother’s religion and be a Muslim, I want him to get the same rights and responsibilities that any Christian child has because his father has paid taxes his whole life, his grandfather has paid taxes his whole life,” he said.
“So the Headmistress of Wesley Girls, Madam, whatever you think you are getting, espousing by this show of bigotry you must end it. This country is a circular nation. Taxes are not reduced for people because they are Muslims by high faith….. we are pay the same taxes,” Mr Twum Boafo added.
Mr Twum Boafo added fasting was a person decision and no one has the right to interfere with such personal decisions.
Wesley Girls,Muslim fasting Impasse
The Wesley Girls Senior High School, in Cape Coast in the Central Region, a Methodist School was reported on April 26, to have asked Muslim students not to partake in the Ramadam fast citing health concerns as their reason.
The development, however, did not go down with the Muslim community and a section of the public who had raised concern about religions tolerant in the country.
There had since been banters between the two major religious factions in the country, Christians and Muslims following endorsement of the schools stands by the Parent Teacher Association(PTA) of the School, the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference as well as the Christian Council of Ghana.
