"Fish for sex" prevalent among fisher folks in New Takoradi

A growing number of fishers, traders, and locals with connections to the Western Region’s beaches have attested to the reality of exchanging sex for fish.

They blamed the activity on several factors, including unemployment—especially among women who were frequently seen hanging around on beaches—a lack of discipline and self-control on the side of some females who enjoyed engaging in such behaviour, and men’s useful role in taking advantage of such naive people.

In a conversation with men and women at the New Takoradi Fish Landing Beach, Ghana News Agency (GNA) learned that women who typically traded their bodies for fish later sold the fish to get money for urgent needs.

Some have made it their regular business, while others visit only during the busy season to partake in the trade.

Fisherman Ekow Yawda, aka ‘Kwesi Botwey, told the GNA that the practice was common in all coastal areas.

She said: “There are some women who exchange sex for fish from fishermen to either consume or sell to make ends meet,”

“These women, including teenagers, would be roaming around the seashore in their hot dresses, collect fish from the fishermen without paying and will agree to have sex with the fishermen later in the evening,” other fishermen collaborated.

According to Regina Constance Eshun, a beachgoer, “Yes, sometimes you might try other relationships but did not work, so if you come here and you meet a guy who is interested in you, why not, you will try it.” She continued, “People meet their life partners from the practice.”

The Church of Pentecost’s Madam Monica Simpson, a deaconess, called the practice an insult to womanhood and said it should be discouraged.

She urged society and parents to assist in restraining the behaviour and come up with creative ways to give the girl kid more authority.
