The Ghana Navy has been admitted into the Virtual Maritime Traffic Centre and Transregional Maritime Network (VMTC & TMN) in a boost to the fight against piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.
The VMTC & TMN which is a virtual network connecting Maritime Operation Centers of member Navies operates a system, based on commercial hardware and software developed within the Italian Navy that enables the sharing of unclassified information related to merchant shipping on vessels bigger than 300 tons among participants.
Speaking at a ceremony to ascent Ghana’s admission into the network, onboard the Italian Navy Ship (ITS) Nave Borsini at the Tema Port, the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Issah Yakubu called for a collaborated effort by regional and international navies to fight against crimes at sea.
The CNS who described Ghana’s admission as relevant and timely said, maritime security issues were beyond the scope of one navy, hence the need for a joint effort to win the fight against crimes at sea and ashore.
The ceremony included a tour of the ship by Rear Admiral Yakubu.
