According to President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo, the government is conscious of the navy’s great responsibility to ensure the safety and security of Ghana’s marine zones.
The government’s efforts to modernise the Ghana Navy are consistent with this.
He claims that the government’s retooling of security forces, particularly the navy, has produced beneficial outcomes in the maritime sector given Ghana’s feat of not having had any ship kidnappings for the previous two years.
These comments were made by President Akufo-Addo during the commissioning of ships at the Western Naval Command.
“Considering that the country has recorded several attacks on ships including the kidnapping of 9 crew members from Ghanaian fishing vessel in 2021.”
“I endorse efforts being made to create a secured anchorage area to protect ships at anchorage.”
Dominic Nitiwul, the Minister of Defence, emphasised that the security of our seas is important to both us and our allies, motivating them to help the Ghanaian Armed Forces.
“It is pleasing to see our partners take a keen interest in our security sector through capacity building and equipment upgrade.”

As a coastal state, we are required under the law of the sea agreement to safeguard and maintain the marine environment and prevent ship pollution without endangering the ability of future generations, according to Minister of Transport Kwaku Ofori Essiamah.
