GRA increases tax revenue by 180% in the last 4 years

The Commissioner for Domestic Tax Revenue Division at Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Edward Appenteng Gyamerah says the authority has increased its tax revenue by 180% in the last 4 years.

Speaking to Skyy News on the sidelines of The Domestic Tax Revenue Division of the GRA Management Retreat in Takoradi, Mr Gyamerah indicated that this is the hard of the Domestic Tax Revenue Division (DTRD) and despite the challenges, DTRD has remained resilient to accomplish its revenue collection mandate.

Mr Gyamerah said During the financial year, DTRD collected Ghs 82.295 Billion compared to Ghs 53.444 Billion collected in FY 2022. This enabled DTRD to surpass its revenue target with a deviation of 7.2% on target.

Also, the division’s performance has been consistent with the prevailing economic indicators, especially the estimated GDP growth of 1.7% in 2023.

He said, “During the financial year, DTRD also recorded a milestone after revenue collection more than doubled in the last 4 years from Ghs 31.871 Billion in FY 2019, to Ghs 82.95 Billion, representing a growth of 180% in the last 4 years.”

He said this excellent performance is attributed to initiatives implemented by DTRD which were geared towards expanding the tax base and enforcement.

Some of these initiatives, he said include, “Tax Base Expansion was a key deliverable in the DTRD 2023 Annual Action Plan. Through this initiative, DTRD recruited more taxpayers arising from the newly implemented policies including E-VAT, E-Commerce, Gaming and Betting Tax and Voluntary Tax Disclosure, and Upfront VAT, among others.”

“Other strategies included DTRD business process technological interventions and collaboration with key public and private institutions. The implementation of technology drove revenue mobilization through data-led compliance management frameworks.”

“The automation of some key DTRD processes enabled the Authority to improve taxpayers’ services and subsequently collect more revenue.”

“Some of the technologies implemented during the period include Gaming and betting, E-commerce and among others.”
