The Western Regional Minister began a tour of all the 14 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDA) in the region in 2022 to inspect all ongoing government projects.

Dr Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah is continuing the task this year and started with a tour of ongoing government projects in the Shama District Tuesday, January 10, and the Wassa East District on Wednesday, January 11.

The regional Minister speaking at a Staff Durbar at the Wassa East District Assembly Hall said they will reclaim all lands devastated by illegal mining in the district and turn it into a cattle ranch for development.

He said this is the idea of the DCE, Mr Emmanuel Boakye and is a laudable one which he fully supports.

The Minister said, “When the Chief Executive came back from America, he brought us a proposal to reclaim some parts of the devastated lands and turn them into a cattle ranch. We want to reclaim every single devastated land.”

Speaking further, the Minister said the number of chieftaincy disputes in the district is alarming and he is urging all factions to unite and do what is right because it continues to hinder development in Wassa East.

“One other area I believe worries us here is the issue of chieftaincy disputes, after meeting with the assembly, they mentioned more than 10 chieftaincy disputes within 20 minutes which I believe it is a big challenge.”

“It seems there are so many interferences of so many new definitions for the installation of chiefs that is becoming too much of a problem. In the akan society, it is the Queen Mothers’ responsibility to nominate a chief, not the ebusua panyin or kingmakers.”
