Man jailed 20 years for mining under high tension cable

George Fynn, an apprentice welder, was given a 20-year prison term by the Tarkwa Circuit Court for mining under a high-tension cable.

Fynn admitted admission to the conspiracy and unlawful mining charges that were brought against him.

According to Mr. Kingsley Agyekum, Assistant State Attorney for the Western Region, who oversaw the prosecution, the complainant is Joseph Ntiful, the unit committee chairman of Esuoso in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality.

He said that both the accused and his conspirators, who were identified as Effah and Christian, were still at large.

On the outskirts of Esuoso, Mr. Agyekum claimed that illegal miners had convert a section of land under a high tension electrical wire into an illegal mining site for some time.

According to him, the Esuoso chief filled in every pit the illegal miners had dug in order to prevent damage to the high tension lines.

According to the Assistant State Attorney, Fynn and his companions went to the location where they were prohibited from mining on August 30, 2021, at around 2:30 am, dug three new pits there, and began mining.

He said that the Esuoso chief received a tip and ordered the arrest of the accused, but when a witness who lives nearby went to the spot, the three fled as soon as they saw him.

Lack evaded Fynn, according to Mr. Agyekum, who was caught and sent to the chief, who gave the complainant instructions to hand him over to the Tarkwa Police where they filed a complaint.
