Minister cuts sod for contruction of Agona Nkwanta

The Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development Mr Daniel Kwaku Botwe has cut sod for the construction of the of Agona Nkwanta – Domeabra and Damtse Junction to Damtse community road.

The sod was cut on Thursday, September 14 for the 2.1 kilometre road with a construction time period of 12 months.

Speaking at the sod cutting ceremony at Agona Nkwanta, Mr Dan Botwe said the road construction is under the urban development project of the Ghana Secondary Cities Support programme at a cost of 14 million Ghana Cedis which the fund is readily available.

“The money is available and in the bank as I am speaking, there is no way the contractor will work and even break for one day due to issues with payment because the money is readily available.”

Mr Dan Botwe also called for the inclusion of local contents in the construction of the project as it will help create employment for the people.

“There is a need for the contractor to employ the skilled locals in the municipality as a means to create employment as well. We don’t want a situation the youth will come out to say they were not employed for the project.”

The Municipal Chief Executive of Ahanta West Municipality, Mr John Agyare speaking at the ceremony said In 2022, the Ministry of Local Government. Decentralisation and Rural Development, as part of its efforts and commitment to have more Municipalities benefit from the Ghana Secondary Cities Programme and grant, expanded the programme beneficiaries from 25 Municipalities to 35 Municipalities, an addition of 10. Out of the many Municipalities to choose from. Ahanta West Municipality was selected as part of the 10 Municipalities.

He said this was not by chance or because of their might as a Municipality, and after the selection, the Assembly was then given the opportunity to select a project for the first year of implementation of the programme. Having assessed the urban infrastructure needs in line with the guidelines of the programme, they settled on the 1.5 km Domeabra road and the 0.6 km Damtse road.
