Some youth in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis are scheduled to embark on a demonstration on October 27 dubbed Sekondi-Takoradi Deserves Better.
This demonstration is aimed at expressing their concerns and seeking accountability from heads of institutions about the deplorable state of infrastructures, particularly roads in the city.
In an interview with Skyy News, Mr Malik Botwe who is a member of the NPP Communication Team in the Western Region, asserted that the issues of concern in the demonstration are already a work in progress.
He believes that it is a lack of communication between the institutional heads and the people that have pushed them to want to embark on the demonstration.
He said, “I believe that they have constitutional rights, article 21 talks about freedom of expression, demonstration, association and all that, again, the same 1992 constitution, articles 55, 1 and 2 gives people the right to form or join any political party of their choice.”
“The conversation is very simple, as our brothers are saying that Takoradi deserves better, we’re also of the view that Takoradi has done better but we need more. The difference here is, that we don’t subscribe to their policy that nothing is being done, what we’re saying is that we’re doing something, we’re doing what we have to do but if the conversation is we want more, that conversation is different from nothing at all.”
“So our our petition is clear, let’s have that conversation and tell us what your issues are and let us tell you what is being done, and what is going to be done so that we all can arrive at a consensus.”
“I can never say I don’t support the demonstration because of the permission given by the National Constitution, but the basis of the demonstration is what we are saying it doesn’t stand well, what issues are you raising?”
“Roads and hospitals are being constructed. A sixty-bed hospital is under construction at New Takoradi, if you talk about sports facilities, we have Astroturf being constructed at New Takoradi and Number 1.”
He mentioned that the way forward to address their concerns is to have an open conversation with the heads of institutions in charge so that an agreement can be reached.
