NSS to be upgraded into authority

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is being upgraded into an Authority, according to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He said that a draught policy was being created to that end, and that efforts were then being made to pass legislation to support the proposed change in the Scheme’s status.

In his remarks at the NSS’s 50th anniversary celebration, President Nana Akufo-Addo stressed that the NSS was ready to evolve in response to new global trends.

When they take effect, the policy and the law will also support a deployment for employment model designed to motivate recent graduates to actively contribute to the country’s long-term development objectives.

On Development, the anniversary is being celebrated. The theme”NSS at 50: Repositioning the Scheme for a Sustainable National Development.”

Lectures, a financing summit, blood donation, a clean-up exercise, planting trees, a corporate social responsibility initiative, and the debut of the Golden Jubilee Magazine are among the events planned. In order to improve the NSS’s ability to serve the country, President Akufo-Addo emphasised the necessity of doing so.

Through improved training and skill development, the Scheme should be able to meet the job demands of recent graduates.

The idea of national service, according to President Akufo-Addo, should be taken seriously since it contributes to Ghana’s development by instilling in young people a feeling of patriotism, nationalism, voluntarism, and discipline.

He praised Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi, the executive director of the NSS, for his unique leadership and vision.

800,000 service members have been placed across the economy since 2017 to assist the mainstream workforce in carrying out its mission.

The President asked the leadership of the Scheme to seriously take into account sectors like health, agriculture, ICT, and other technological fields important to the growth of the country.

He praised the NSS for its accomplishments over the years and gave the Scheme the government’s support it needs for long-term expansion.

The Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Alban Bagbin, recommended the NSS to make an effort to match its initiatives with the country’s development plan.

The NSS Executive Director, Mr. Osel Assibey Antwi, made a suggestion that the Scheme was farming some 20,000 acres of land at the Sekyere-Kumawu economic area.

He stated that the project and other initiatives, particularly in the tourist sector and built environment, were producing fruitful outcomes and reaffirmed that “we are ready to support national development.”
