The Ghana AIDs Commission has revealed that there are currently 23,904 persons living with HIV in the Western Region alone.
Also, 1,101 people got infected with HIV in the region in 2022.
The Technical Coordinator for the Ghana Aids commission Mr Dramani Yakubu made this revelation at the 2023 National Farmers Day celebration by the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly.
He said, “The current HIV Prevalence in the Region is 1.63%. This means that, out of every 100 people in the Western Region, 2 of them are living with HIV.”
“This data clearly tells us that HIV is still here with us and we should not take risks such as unprotected sexual relationships with multiple partners.”
He said as part of measures to fight the disease, they will be commemorating World AIDS Day in December under the theme “Let Communities Lead”.
This theme is a call for action for communities to play a more active role in the HIV response.
The idea according to Mr Yakubu is that communities connect people with person-centred public health services, build trust, monitor the implementation of policies and services and hold service providers accountable.
“As such, we can end AIDS as a public health threat if communities lead the way and play a more active role” he added.
