Zoomlion Ghana Limited has climax an evacuation of 10 refuse damping sites in the Northern East Region at the Chereponi district to improved the sanitation situation.
The refuse dumping sites consist of West Mamprusi Municipal 5, East Mamprusi Municipal 1, Bunkpurugu-Nyankpanduri District 1, and Chereponi District 3.
Some of the refuse sites were over one decade without being evacuated, which posed a danger to the residents.
The evacuation formed part of the ongoing nationwide exercise which targeted dumping sites under the Government’s Clean Ghana Agenda aimed at resolving the sanitation challenges in the country.
The evacuation was implemented by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD), in collaboration with Chereponi District Assembly.
The District Chief Executive for Chereponi, Hajia Zuweiratu Mada Nashiru commended the Zoomlion and the ministry for supporting them to improve the sanitation situation.
She said, that has posed a danger to the residents and was making the nearby houses uncomfortable especially when the wind blows it taking dust into the various houses and contaminating their water.
She added that rainfall carried some of the refuse to the river which is the only source of water for the community to contaminate it making it unsafe for domestic purposes.
“The health condition of the residents would increase because the refuse was creating health hazards to the people,” she said.
According to her, typhoid was a common disease in the district and another water-contaminated related disease that drained their resources, “we have spent a lot of money in treating typhoid.”
Mrs. Nashiru noted that providing containers for residents to dump in the refuse would prevent dumping indiscriminately.
“the assembly would provide containers at the dumping sites to prevent gathering another heap,” Mrs. Nashiru said.
She revealed that the assembly would construct a modern befitting toilet facility for residents to improve the sanitation situation and prevent sanitation-related diseases.
She, therefore urged residents not to dump indiscriminately after the evacuation.
For his part, the Presiding Member of the assembly, Sharif Abdul Rahaman narrated that residents have always wanted the refuse evacuated but the assembly was not having enough resources to evacuate it.
He explained that this would go a long way to support the assembly to maintain the site clear after the evacuation to improve the sanitation situation.
He advised the residents to own the site as they own their homes to make sure that they support the government to improve the sanitation situation in the country.
