Sack Ofori- Atta, Adu Boahen else – NPP MPs threatens President

Some Members  of the Majority Caucus in Parliament have asked the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to as a matter of urgency, relieve the Finance Minister Mr Ken Ofori-Atta and Minister of State in charge of Finance, Mr Charles Adu Boahen off their duties  or be made to resign.

At a press conference in Accra, on October 25, the Majority MP’s said to be about 80 in number, threatened to boycott all government business in the house if the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo fails to act on their demands.

“We want to serve notice, and notice is hereby served that until such persons as aforementioned are made to resign or removed from office, we members of the Majority Caucus here in Parliament will not participate in any business of Government by or, for the president by any other Minster,” the MPs said in a viral video sighted by GhanaPlus.com.

“We hope that those of us in the back bench and members of the Majority caucus will abide by this prayer.  We are saying that if our request is not responded to positively, we will not be present for the budget hearing neither will we participate in the debate,” they reiterated.

Ofori-Atta must go

The MPs becomes the newest group to called for the exit of Mr Ken Ofori- Atta since the country’s economic woes begun this year.

Others who have called for his resignation include the opposition National Democratic Congress, Former President and 2020 flagbearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama, member of the NPP and Former General Secretary, Kwabena Adjei Agyepong as well as NPP Flagbearer hopeful, Addai Nimoh and host of others.

Some great personalities within the Academia have also called for same.

Ghana’s economic crises

Mr Ken Ofori-Atta has come under intense criticism with many calling for his resignation or an action from the President to relieve him of his post following the  country’s dire economic situation since March this year.

Harsh economic conditions, rising cost of living, high prices of petroleum products and it ripple effect on goods and services have become a source of worry for many as there seem to be no end in sight any time soon.

To make matters worse, the country’s currency, the Cedi has seen a significant depreciation against major trading currencies since the beginning of the year.

As at today, it is trading around ₵15 plus against the US dollars.

The country is currently in talks with the International Monetary Fund for support for its programmes, something Mr Ofori-Atta earlier said will never happen.

Many have since called for his resignation but Mr Ofori-Atta has said asking him to resign is like asking a father to step aside from his children because he changed his mind about something.

”It is almost like telling a father to resign from his children because he has changed his mind,” he said.

He explained sometimes decisions have to be made for survival and that is what the country did.

“There are times that decisions have to be made for the survival of the country and therefore, if such circumstances such as Covid or Ukraine war occur which are not typical, it does change the environment,” Mr Ofori-Atta mentioned.

The President has also expressed confident in the Finance Minister adding that he does not see any reason to heed to the call.
