Students in EKMA engaged on illegal abortion

Students in the municipality have received education on issues related to teenage pregnancy and unlawful abortions from the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly (EKMA) Department of Community Development and Social Welfare.

During her presentation on the sociocultural and economic effects of early pregnancy, especially on girls, Madam Alimatu Sadia Abubakari, a Senior Social Welfare and Community Development Officer of EKMA, prayed that they would choose to concentrate on their studies to become more responsible members of their families in the future.

Within the municipality, she observed that residents of the Kwesimintsim and Aprendo neighbourhoods were starting to express concern about teenage pregnancy.

The consequences of adolescent pregnancy, including obstetric fistula, giving birth to underweight kids, stillbirth, dropping out of school, and the danger of catching sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), were discussed with the students by Mr John Afful, an official from Marie Stopes International.

He stated that students should abstain from sexually explicit behaviours and that doing so puts them in danger of acquiring sexually transmitted diseases.

Mr Afful counselled the students to prioritise their reproductive health and address any suspected cases of candidature.

Therefore, the students were advised not to engage in premarital sex which could result in unintended pregnancies and subsequent illegal abortions.
