Travellers in Sekondi-Takoradi plead with gov't to reduce transport fares after 20% increment

Some travellers in Sekondi-Takoradi are pleading with the government to reduce transport fares after it was increased by 20%.

Travellers travelling from Takoradi to Accra at the Accra Station were hit with a shock after they realised that they are paying an abnormal fare from what they paid a few days ago or a week ago.

A traveller was surprised to realise that she id paying GHS60 for a ticket after she paid only GHS50 the previous day when coming to Takoradi.

In a related development, the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has debunked claims to increase transport fares by 20%.

The GRTCC says there has not been any meeting with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) to agree on a 20% increase in transport fares.

General Secretary of GRTCC, Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah speaking to the media explained that the usual convention has been for the Union to meet with the GRTCC and the Transport Ministry before any upward adjustment in transport fares is announced.

He said that the Council is not aware of the 20% increase in transport fares. Adding that the Council is yet to meet with the Transport Ministry and the GPRTU to decide on the percentage of increment.

Earlier, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) revealed that it will adjust transportation fares upwards by 20%.

According to the Union, the increment will take effect from Saturday, May 7.
